Hi! I prepared this lil guide for y'all to have the best results from our photoshoots! This advice is mostly tailored for couples & families & friends sessions, in my photography style. However, I am always open to unconventional creative ideas! Don't take this as a rulebook - it's just tips!

The goal is to feel like yourself, look comfortable, and create a cohesive look that photographs beautifully. Here are some simple, practical tips to help you prepare.

Decide in advance

Try to plan your outfits ahead of time rather than leaving it until the last minute. If you’re unsure, feel free to reach out—I’m always happy to give input or help you decide. I can work with what you already have, but sometimes a little shopping can make a big difference. If you’re at a store and debating between options, send me photos and I’ll gladly help you choose something that works well.

Keep kids comfortable (and bring extras!)

For kids especially, comfort is key. If they feel good, it will show in the photos. Choose soft, easy-to-move-in clothing and always bring a backup outfit in case of spills, dirt, or unexpected changes.

Coordinate, don’t match

Instead of dressing everyone in identical outfits like a uniform, aim for coordination. Think of colors and styles that complement each other rather than matching exactly. This creates a more natural and visually interesting look. Unless uniform is the point of course, then it is entirely different approach.

What makes you feel confident and comfortable?

Wear something that makes you feel good. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit or feeling self-conscious, it will show. Comfort and confidence always photograph better than something trendy but uncomfortable.

Choose a style that reflects you

Your outfit should feel like you. Whether your style leans classic, boho, cottagecore, or something more traditional, go with what feels natural. Timeless styles tend to photograph especially well.

Be mindful of insecurities

It’s completely normal to feel a little insecure about certain parts of your body. We are all human after all. Without focusing on that too much, you can choose clothing that helps you feel more at ease—like sleeves, long skirts, or loose-fitting pants and dresses. The idea is to help you relax and enjoy the moment.

Patterns

Patterns are absolutely fine and can look beautiful in photos. The key is balance—pair patterned pieces with solid colors so the overall look doesn’t feel too busy.

Heavy graphics

Large logos, bold text, cartoon characters, or band graphics can draw attention away from what matters most—you. Subtle styling is always a safer choice unless it is a part of your personal style and you want it in the photos. In that case try to balance it with solid colors as well.

Colors

Color is wonderful in photos, so don’t avoid it. However, too much of one extreme—like all white, all black, heavy navy, very bright neon, or overly saturated tones—can be overwhelming or distracting if overdone. A mix of soft, complementary tones usually works best.

Add texture for interest

Textures photograph beautifully and add depth to your images. Think knit sweaters, linen dresses, muslin fabrics, flowy materials, denim, or even leather. These small details make a big difference.

Accessories and shoes

Accessories like hats, scarves, necklaces, or belts can add personality to your outfit. If you have special or meaningful jewelry, this is a great time to wear it—it becomes part of your story. As for shoes, sometimes barefoot works best, especially in natural settings.

Don’t force it

If you don’t like something, don’t wear it. There’s no “correct” outfit—only what feels right for you. Authenticity always wins.

Fit

When in doubt, it’s better to go slightly looser than too tight. Clothes that are too snug can feel restrictive and may not photograph as comfortably.

Small details

Try to avoid items in pockets like phones, keys, or wallets, as they can create bulk. Hair ties on wrists can also show up in photos, so it’s best to remove them beforehand.

Makeup

Makeup is entirely up to you. You don’t need to wear any if you prefer a natural look. Simple touches like fresh hair, moisturized skin, and hydrated lips go a long way. If you do wear makeup, keep it light—think a bit of blush, mascara, eyebrow gel, lip balm, and maybe a touch of highlighter. Heavy foundation or powder can sometimes look less natural in outdoor light.

At the end of the day, your clothing should support the photo, not take over it. Think of your outfit as a frame that highlights your face and your connection with each other—that’s the true focus of your session. If you’re ever unsure, just reach out. I’m here to help make this process easy and enjoyable so you can focus on what really matters: being present and creating beautiful memories.
